This small application enables you to use your Macintosh as an
oscilloscope. Although this digital oscilloscope cannot be
compared with the power of real oscilloscopes, it may be useful
for a variety of tasks in the lower frequency domain. All you
need for this application to work is a sound input device.
Systems software 7.0 or later is required.

Along with this application comes a Word document with an
exhaustive description of all features. For those who have ever
used an oscilloscope, most features will be self-explanatory.

no fpu updater. I messed up names when going from Mac to Unix on the
original sending.

It might be worth noting that the files saved in version 4.0.4 cannot
be reopened in version 4.0.1 (or 4.0.0 or 4.0.2). Altsys changed the
file format with version 4.0.3.

Subject: [*] Gimmick; a little program that blinks the LEDs

Gimmick is a little background-only application which plays a little
with the LEDs on an extended keyboard. I know, this is not the only
program doing this, but as far as I know, it is the only one, which also
works with ISO- i.e. non-US-extended keyboards. At least it works with
my German keyboard.

Launch it like any application, or put in the "Startup Items" folder in the
system folder and restart. To quit it, you must use some utility like
"NoFinder" or any process manager, or restart the Mac.

No guarantee, std-disclaimers apply. If you like it, ok. If you don't, too.
May be distributed freely.

Is there anybody out there, who is willing to write an init that switches
the leds on every keypress? I could supply you with the source for the led
handling (heavily based on some Apple snippet). My son, two years old, would be
*really* grateful.

are 8-spaces wide (looks nice on our unix box). You may have trouble
viewing this document if your font and tabs are not of a similar size.

This document is a list of modem commands for the Prometheus-made "LineLink
144e" modem. It is a v.32 data/fax/voice modem sold for $99(US) through
MacWarehouse (tel:[phone]) that has attracted a lot of attention
lately. Please see related files such as the "lineline-144e-faq" for more
general information about the modem and its use, if you don't already own
one. The FAQ provide helpful information, while this document is inteneded
only for owner reference purposes (not very handy without the modem).

This document is compiled from several sources. The information contained
herein is assumed to be correct, but it is used at your own risk. The sources
include the LineLink manual, Hayes modem command sets, Supra modem command
sets, Global Village modem command sets, and Fax Class 1/2 documents. Aside

Subject: [*] Strip-Mac! 3.0.1 -- Adult party game

A quick outline of the game Strip-Mac! is a risque, computer-moderated
party game for adults. It is similar to a game of strip poker, but with
"surprises", "rewards" and "punishments" thrown in for good measure.

Briefly, the game plays as follows. Players take turns in drawing a
playing card from the deck. A player who fails to turn up an appropriate
playing card must then choose between options that include:
    (a)  being paid to removing a piece of clothing;
    (b)  being paid to take a punishment; and
    (c)  purchasing a reward.

Play continues until one or all players are naked. What happens next is
up to you. Version 3.0.1 fixes a few bugs in version 3.0, and adds a few
new cards.

Dear netters,
I have a problem with my old ABATON Interfax 24/96 because
the fax software doesn't work under System 7.1. I have contacted
several stores here in Italy, but I have been told that
ABATON doesn't support that product anymore, so I was not
able to have neither the last release of their fax software
(that seems to be stable under 7.0.1) nor information about
how to fix my problem. Any idea/ suggestion????
I would also like to know if with the FAXstf 3.0 I can override
all these problems and in which way. Thank you for your help.
Sorry if this problem has been already discussed in this list,
but I have not been able to read several digests recentely.

I just got a Quadra 650 and I'm experiencing the system taking up a *lot* of
memory as it runs.  When I pull down "about the Finder" it tells me that the
system is taking up ~13M of RAM.  I'm running almost the exact same software
that I was running when I was on my old IIci (under system 7.0.1 with tuneup).
I'm now running under 7.1 with the 2.0.1 system update.  The old system ate
about 5M of RAM.  Anyone experienced this problem before who could shed some
light on it?  Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Q] Correct interleave value and drivers for Plus peripherals?

I have a Plus with 4MB of RAM. I have a GCC 20MB FX HD, a 44MB SyQuest from
APS, and a Qume HF24DR HyperFloppy all connected via the SCSI connector with
termination power provided by an APS SCSI Sentry. One of my problems is
choosing the correct driver software and interleave value to use. I've read
that the Plus requires an interleave value of 3 and I have also seen a value of
2 recommended.  It has been suggested that I don't want to interleave the
removable media because I want to also read it on my Centris 650. The driver
software that came with the GCC and Qume are pre System 7.1 (which I use on the
Plus to enable file sharing with the Centris) and I'm not sure if their inits
cause problems  with each other as incorrect icons appear when volumes mount
(if nothing else, I know that they take up sparse RAM). I'd like to use more
recent software which I have, either APS Power Tools v2.8.1 or  FWB HDT Primer
v1.3.1, to format and install their drivers, but neither seems to work (work is
defined as formating and having a volume that boots with a system, mounts &
dismounts without SCSI Probe and with SCSI Probe v3.5, and doesn't cause system
crashes or lockups or unhappy faces). Anyone have any suggestions?

Subject: [Q] MicroNet DAT drives.

I've recently purchased a MicroNet Advantage DAT Backup 2000 unit.  I've been
trying for the last several days (without success, I might point out) to get
the thing to work.  I've tried it with my Quadra 650 and my officemate's
IIx (mine running 7.1, his running 7.0), with different SCSI cables, different
tapes.  I've tried running it with both Fastback Plus and Retrospect (which
came with the unit).  If I try to erase the tapes, I get about 5 minutes of
activity and then it craps out with an error 206 (media failure or something).

I *did* sort of get it working for about ten minutes at one point.  We took a
tape from another unit and used that to backup without erasing/formating it
first.  It saved about 50M and then told us the tape was full (which it should
not have been considering that it started empty and had a 2.0G capacity.  When
we put the second tape in, it promptly returned to its old ways.

I've gotten ahold of another drive from the manufacturer and had the exact same
problems with it.  I've also had the tech support person from the vendor I got
the drive through come and look at it.  Right now we're both stumped.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone might shed on this matter.  Thanks

Subject: Apple PowerCD with Quadra 610/DOS?

Has anyone been able to get the PowerCD to read a DOS or Windows
CD through the DOS card? Under DOS, I get the error message:
"CD103: CDROM Not High Sierra or ISO-9600 format." With Windows,
the file manager show the E: drive as a CD icon but I get "There is no
disk in drive E:" message. Any ideas? Many thanks!

I have to select an Effect in the AV Sound control panel each time I
startup.  Is there any way to save the effect between startups?

Anyone know of any _new_ AV Effects or PlainTalk voices on the net?

ApplePhone - it's at 1.0.1 and I hear that a new Phone app is due shortly,
no updates to the old one.  Any developers doing Telephony/GeoPort app
work?   A full featured ApplePhone is needed.

Anyone getting acceptable ApplePhone sound quality (for both callers) with
an AV Monitor?  Everyone I talk to on it says there is too much echo and
feedback.

In order to connect my Mac to the departmental RISC I'm planning to use
InterSLIP, MacTCP and Eudora, TurboGopher, etc.
The gateway scripts coming with InterSLIP don't work perfectly (obvious!)
with the server I'm connecting to, so I'd like to modify them.
They are written in CCL (Communication Control Language), that is a quite
common language in this field. Only I have no idea where I may find a
reference manual for it.
Any idea or suggestion? If possible CC: your answer directly to me, as
the system is going up and down, so that two messages have more chances
than one of passing thorough...

MacPGP2.3.cpt.bin       is the latest non-commercial version for the Mac
PCpgp23a.zip            is the DOS version and
jwps16.zip              is a Windows Shell interface to it.

Transfer all as binary. If anyone knows of newer versions let me know.

The accompanying documentation is quite extensive and I found them all easy
to use. I use the MIME mail type application/x-pgp to transfer encrypted files
and keys via e-mail. Any MIME compliant mailer should be able to handle this.

I am trying to help a colleague control a laserdisc presentation for
her class and am up against my own inexperience in this area. I have
had no problem controlling discs that provide information regarding
the frame numbers but cannot seem to get that information from some
of the newer discs. Question: do all laserdiscs contain frame-number
information and, if so, how does one access it? The best I can get
from the one laserdisc that I am working with is the running time.

I'm working with a very old version of the Voyager Video stack. I
assume that there must be something better around by now and would
very much appreciate any and all suggestions.

I recently fetched the Macintalk Pro file from ftp.apple.com. I got a
6 meg .hqx file which decoded into a 4.6 meg .sea. When I expanded
that I had a folder containing: Plaintalk text-to-speech and 3 voices,
male, female and male compressed. The text to speech file was,
apparantly, an extension but when I put it in the extensions folder
and rebooted it didn't get recognised as such. (Which means to say
that there was no icon and Conflict Catcher didn't list it, FWIW.

Talking to some other Mac users I should have had an installer and
some other files. Where do I find these?

Excuse me if this is basic stuff, but I'm new to the network world,
especially in the TPC/IP arena.

Current set-up:
    -Unix host(Sequent) hooked to the internet.
    -Separate local LAN(also attached to Sequent), but masked off of
        the internet.  We have numerous terminal servers attached
        to this LAN for all of our users to get to the sequent.
    -Mac IIsi with a serial connection to one of the terminal servers.

What I wanna do:
    - Establish a SLIP connect from my Mac through our terminal
        servers so I can play with all of the cool Mac based internet
        s'ware(TurboGopher, Mosaic, etc..)

Other Info:
    - The terminal servers are SLIP compatible
    - Local LAN IP numbers 97.0.0.(1-30).
    - Sequent IP address 134.11.70.1

Questions:
    - How should I configure MacTCP, InterSLIP and the terminal server

I understand the basic idea behind IP adresses and SLIP, but I am getting
confused abut which IP adress I should put where in all of the software
packages.
I hope this description is OK, and I would appreciate any help.  Everyone
hold your breath, there is rumor that I can find an ethernet board for my
SI.  Until then I would like to experiment with SLIP.

For those who don't know NET/Mac...   NET/Mac is the application that
supports TCP/IP over packet-radio, which means, that hamradio operators
can use NET/Mac for their wireless TCP/IP network...

In this version of NET/Mac I implemented the following:

- Added 'chat' command
- Enhance syntax-checking for 'IP-number'-style parameters
- Make sure the mailaddress looks like: ...%...%...%...%...@...
- Improved the generation of From addresses for hop-to-hop

This release also includes a new NET/Mac Syntax DA.

This version obsoletes all versions of info-mac/comm/net/radio-netmac in
the Sumex-Aim archives.

The new NET/Mac has (hopefully) been uploaded to:
1) ucsd.edu, to the directory hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming.
   If it's not there then look at hamradio/packet/tcpip/mac.

 This might be blasphemy but I have found a program that behaves like the
windows on the Next computers. By that I mean the scroll bar scrolls the
text in real time. So when you move the scroll bar using the mouse the text
will scroll as you move the scroll markers. Along with the size of the
scroll marker indicates the size of the open file. So this effect works as
follows the smaller the file the bigger the scroll bar. The bigger the file
the smaller the scroll bar. This facilitates both the ease to scroll and
showing you how big the file is.

 The program is Photodex Picture Factory. I would like to have a Control
Panel or extension that would do this on my Power Macintosh.

replies when connected.

I own Microphone Pro which is supposed to do this, but it d/l's the mailbox
as a single file and does not parse the messages--anyone know how to fix this?

While exploring Hypercard 2.2 today I noticed the following very curious
behavior. If anyone who knows the deep inner workings of HC can shed some
light, I'd be very grateful.

Here's what I did. I created a small stack with the following stack script:
on openstack
  answer "In openstack handler."
end openstack

I saved this stack as a standalone application. When I run the stack (NOT
the app) I get the answer dialog twice! There is about a two second delay
between appearances of the dialog. But when I run the standalone
application, I get the answer dialog once.

Why is HC calling openstack twice, but the standalone only once? Note, by
the way, I only get the double dialog when I launch HC by double-clicking
on the stack. If HC is already running, I only get the dialog one time,
just like the standalone.

Final note: just to make sure it wasn't a system-specific problem, I
called a friend and had him run the same experiment, and he got the same
double-dialog dance...

I do not know if that game is worth getting, but...
You could use the following procedure:
Unbinhex the files on the Un*x machine using the free utility called mcvert.
If the files are many or too big, you may want to tar them in a single file.
Split the resulting file, copy to floppies.
Use ChunkJoiner (shameless plug, I am the author) to rejoin the files.
ChunkJoiner requires System 7.
Use Tar on the Mac to un-tar the files you have joined on the Unix machine.

If you cannot access a Un*x machine and are stuck with the DOS:
split on the DOS machine (do _not_ ask me anything about DOS, please);
read with AFE;
join with ChunkJoiner;
unbinhex with Stuffit Expander.

Can anyone help me with the problem in the subject line? I have an
application written by a student in my lab that captures serial data from a
lab instrument controlled by an H-P 300 series computer. This data is
decoded into a graphic image and saved to disk in PICT format. I would like
to change the graphic save to PAINT format, as I currently have to open the
document with CANVAS, convert it to MacPaint format, and close and open it
again before I can do any graphic editing. If the application would save in
PAINT format to begin with, it would be a lot easier.

Here's the answer to those confused by the huge Mystique segments in the
archives. They're created by Stuffit Lite's new multi-disk archive feature.

Each of the downloaded .hqx parts expands to a .sea; those in turn expand
to numbered files. Go to the Translate menu of Stuffit Lite 3.0.7, select
Segment, and select its submenu item Join. (Surprise! It IS there.) You'll
be prompted to select the first segment to join, and you can all take it
from there.

Mystique is truly a labor of love. It's a work of art and deserves a whole
bunch of awards; if you play Myst, it's well worth the download.

Use Unstuffit 3.0.7 to concatenate (de-archive) the files and
uncompress them. Stuffit Expander 3.0.7 cannot de-archive files.
Unstuffit 3.0.7 is available at info-mac (sumex-aim.stanford.edu)
and at mirrors. My son claims Mystique is well worth the effort.

You can't find it because it doesn't exist.  STF considers FaxSTF 3.0 to be
a "new" product and requires 2.x users to purchase an update from them.

Software Perspectives announces upgrades to popular HyperCard tools
New XFCNs boast more power, features

LAKE RIDGE, VA--MAY 2, 1994--Continuing their commitment towards
providing powerful tools for HyperCard developers, Software Perspectives
today announced major upgrades to three of their most popular external
functions for HyperCard, SuperCard and Macromedia Director.  These new
versions add a new command processor technology, which makes controlling
aspects of the XFCN much easier and cleaner.
    The PlayMOD XFCN allows developers to play Amiga MOD files.  Version
    2.0
adds support for 16 bit sound, real time control of filtering, stereo and
volume.  Another major enhancement is the ability to pause and resume a
MOD.  Version 2.0 is also 100% compatible with Macromedia Director, and
with the new command processor, makes it easier to use with Director.
    The second tool, SpeakText, allows developers to implement Apples
Text-To-Speech (TTS) technology in their software.  Version 2.0 adds a
large number of enhancements including: speech pausing, preloading of
text, real time pitch and speech rate control and voice information
access.
DialogDisplay is an XFCN which allows developers to display dialog
windows within HyperCard.  Version 2.0 contains the same powerful
features as before: multiple buttons, multiple strings and ICON button
support, however it adds new font capabilities.  Developers can use any
font, size or style for text in their dialogs.

    With the release of these upgrades, Software Perspectives is also
initiating a new licensing policy.  Prices for licensing vary depending
on the type of software.  Public Domain, Shareware or Freeware software
is $15 for each external, whereas commercial software is $65 for each
external.  Commercial developers receive 1 year of free support and
updates/upgrades, and this coverage can be renewed each year for $35.
Other developers (Public Domain, Shareware, Freeware) get free updates,
however upgrades will carry a processing fee.
